There’s nothing quite like packing up the car, hitting the open road, and heading out for a weekend away with someone special. The Pacific Northwest (PNW) is packed with incredible spots for a quick, romantic escape, whether you want to chill by the coast, breathe in some mountain air, or sip wine while watching the sunset over rolling vineyards. I’ve been planning my own weekend getaway, and as I dove into all the options, I figured I’d share what I found. So, if you’re looking for a few ideas to surprise your partner with an unforgettable weekend, this guide is for you.
The PNW coastline is one of the most laid-back, peaceful places around. Nothing beats the salty air, waves crashing, and the chance to just unwind by the ocean.
Imagine strolling down a wide, open beach with Haystack Rock towering in the distance, then grabbing a beer and warming up by a fire in a beachside cottage. That’s Cannon Beach for you. It’s got that perfect mix of small-town charm and jaw-dropping scenery. I’m already picturing a slow morning walk, coffee in hand, and later a sunset beach fire.
Must-Do Activities:
Long Beach is for those who want a bit more of a low-key, chill vibe. It’s got miles of sandy beaches, a classic boardwalk, and just enough to do without feeling like you need to rush around.
Must-Do Activities:
If the coast doesn’t do it for you, the mountains definitely will. The PNW is packed with peaks, and there’s nothing like waking up to that crisp, cool mountain air.
Mount Hood is the ultimate mountain escape. Whether you’re into skiing, snowboarding, or just sitting by the fire with a drink, this place has it all. For me, the plan would be to head up to Timberline Lodge, maybe take a scenic chairlift ride, and end the day with a hike around Trillium Lake.
Must-Do Activities:
Not too far from Seattle, Snoqualmie feels like a whole different world. It’s got the famous Snoqualmie Falls, and if you can swing it, grab a room at the Salish Lodge & Spa that overlooks the waterfall. Nothing says “weekend getaway” like a room with a view, a massage, and the sound of the falls right outside.
Must-Do Activities:
Alright, let’s talk wine. If you and your partner like to relax with a good glass of vino, you’re in luck. The PNW has some killer wine regions, perfect for spending a day (or two) exploring.
Willamette Valley is the go-to spot for Pinot Noir, and I’m thinking a whole weekend of vineyard-hopping sounds pretty great. This area also has some really cool wine-and-food pairing experiences that can take your wine game up a notch.
Must-Do Activities:
If you’re willing to cross the border (and you should be), Okanagan Valley is where it’s at. It’s a bit of a drive, but man, the scenery makes it worth it. I’m picturing a day of tastings, followed by a chill evening by Okanagan Lake. Maybe even take a sunset cruise if the timing’s right.
Must-Do Activities:
If you want to get away from it all, hop on a ferry and head out to one of the PNW’s beautiful islands. It’s a slower pace of life, and the perfect spot for a laid-back, romantic weekend.
The San Juans are just off the coast of Washington, and they’re probably one of the most underrated weekend getaways out there. Orcas Island is the place to be if you want to explore, or you can just grab a coffee in Friday Harbor and watch the boats come in. We’re definitely booking a whale-watching tour—seeing orcas up close has been on my bucket list forever.
Must-Do Activities:
Salt Spring Island is all about that laid-back, artsy vibe. I’m thinking bike around, stop by a few local farms, and pick up some small-batch cheese or fresh berries. The idea of ending the day with a glass of local wine while watching the sun sink behind the mountains sounds pretty perfect to me.
Must-Do Activities:
I’ve had a blast planning my own weekend getaway in the Pacific Northwest, and I hope this guide gives you a little inspiration for your own trip.
